Robert Lawrence Coughlin (April 11, 1929 – November 30, 2001) was an American lawyer and Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania.

Early life and education

Robert Lawrence Coughlin was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He graduated from Yale University, where he was a member of St. Anthony Hall, in 1950, received an M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1954, and Temple University Evening Law School in 1958.

Military service

He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1950 to 1952.

Political experience

Coughlin served in the Pennsylvania State House from 1965 to 1967, representing Montgomery County as a holder of one of its allotted at-large seats. He was elected to the State Senate in 1966, and in 1968, he was elected to the 91st and to the eleven succeeding Congresses. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1992.

Personal life

He was married to Susan MacGregor Coughlin and they had four children, Lisa, Lynne, Sara, R. Lawrence Coughlin III.
